    Description

    The year was 1997
I was visiting an Atelier in Florence near Sante Croce
where a student from Switzerland, Jacquelin Apel, had just completed a breath taking rendering of Still Life with Brioche by
    Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699 – 1779) using the site-size method.

I had studied the work of Chardin and was moved by his sense of simplicity...and his ability to connect with viewers long after the paint had dried... centuries of eyes have feasted his brioche.

Today Chardin's painting is in the Louvre,
and Jackquelin Apel's version hangs on my studio wall...
to remind me of where the Still Life Genre began
and where someday I wanted to be artistically.
So imagine my thrill when, at Whole Foods, I passed by this freshly baked brioche(with shades of ochre, umbers and oxides)
and a watershed of inspiration fell into my grocery cart
following me home to my studio..  to paint This Brioche for you.
