A studio piece from my 8 x 10 plein air painting. This little lake is on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains .. Tioga Pass, which is in Yosemite National Park. It was late Spring with snow patches still clinging. Spring flowers won't be coming up for another 2 months at this altitude. What attracted me to this scene was the poetry of the water .. a feeling of peaceful stillness with the subtle tones and transparency of the water. The landscape here is very majestic with towering peaks all around. To achieve the poetry I was looking for, I opted for a high horizon, emphasizing the lake. To keep the colors in a close harmony, I used a very limited palette of primary earth colors ..Ocher, Raw Sienna, Indian Red, Ultramarine blue, and Ivory Black. The painting was executed in the Alla prima style.
