    Description

My first trip to Laguna Beach when I was 8 was exciting. I loved the easy going attitude and the laid back vibe and all the artwork at my aunt's house. I never dreamed I'd be living near Laguna Beach, taking an art class in Laguna Beach and painting scenery there. Wow! That really happened. I still have to pinch myself sometimes.

My art teacher, Michael Hallinan of Laguna Beach, taught me how to hold a paint brush about 8 years ago. I have been taking his classes off and on ever since. One class we were going to paint sycamore trees and I didn't have a good photo so he let me use one of his that he took in the canyon where he lives. We started painting the dark colors of the tree and then the rusts and tans. Then we put in the lightest shades of the tree, then grass and sky. Last we added leaves. I couldn't get the leaves right in class so I had to paint them over a few times at home til they looked more like leaves. I really like the way this one turned out. It is an atypical Laguna Beach landscape, no ocean in sight. I've come to love Laguna Beach and have painted the beach several times. But, this is my favorite painting, partly because it is from Michael's photo and was started in his class and because it is not the beach.
